Description
Anthony Laden, Reasonably Radical: Deliberative Liberalism and the Politics of Identity (Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 2001), ix + 226 pp. Anthony Laden's proposal in this book can be summarized, briefly, as a deliberative form of political liberalism. Following John Rawls's path since "Justice as Fairness," (1) Laden aims to restrict the scope of his proposal to political values that escape the controversies that dog appeals to comprehensive conceptions of the good or of human nature. Deliberative liberalism is characterized as a political conception not only because of this restricted scope, but also because it adopts a political approach. For Laden, the theoretical approach has dominated the tradition of liberal thought. According to the theoretical approach, the legitimacy of political principles is derived from considerations about the nature of human beings (in the case of comprehensive theories) or about the nature of democratic citizenship or of political relationships (in the case of political theories), in the theoretical approach, the content of principles of justice depends completely on the political philosopher and their justification relies on the soundness of his or her reasoning. In contrast, in the political approach, both the content and the justification of principles derive from their endorsement by citizens in the framework of actual political deliberation. As Laden claims, "whereas theoretical liberalism attempts to justify the basic liberties as what suitably theorized citizens would endorse, political liberalism justifies the basic liberties as being among the necessary conditions for real citizens to be capable of conferring legitimacy through their actual endorsement" (16).
